Maintenance & Care   >   Wearing Your Hair Extensions

Home Care

Our hair extensions are very simple to look after, and in many ways you can treat them as you would your own real hair. However, it is important that the home care guidelines are followed correctly in order for the hair extensions to sustain their longevity, to keep them in their best condition, and to prevent damage to your natural hair. All client’s are provided with a home care pack, which includes our hair extensions products and a home care guidelines sheet.

Maintenance Appointments

The amount of maintenance required will depend upon how well the extensions have been looked after as well as the clients natural hair type. During maintenance appointments the bonds are examined – any loose seals are replaced and any extensions that have slid out reapplied. Additionally, a ‘top up’ may or may not be necessary, by applying some extra hair extensions to replace any shedding.

It is normal to experience a small amount of shedding and to lose a hair extension from time to time, but so long as the home care guidelines are adhered to this should be kept to a minimum.

How Long Do Hair Extensions Last?

Our hair extensions can generally be worn for 3 months provided that the home care guidelines have been followed correctly.

Every client is different and therefore, some people’s hair extensions will last longer than others depending on their natural hair type.  After this period they will need to be replaced. If you wish, you can have your hair extensions removed and reapplied on the same day, ensuring that your hair continues to look its best.

It is important that hair extensions are not worn for longer than 3 months, before having them reapplied. Due to your hair’s natural life cycle, it is normal to loose up to 100 hairs a day as part of this natural process. When wearing hair extensions the shed hair remains trapped within the bond, and over time it will start to build up at the roots. This can cause matting at the root area if the extensions are worn for too long. Also, as your natural hair continues to shed, the extensions will be secured by fewer strands of your real hair, producing an imbalance of weight and subsequently causing excessive strain on the natural hair if the extensions are kept in longer than 3 months. Therefore, if you leave it too long before having your hair extensions reapplied, you run the risk of damaging your own hair. Additionally, since the extensions grow with your own hair, after 3 months the bonds will have grown down significantly, and can become visible and can also start getting caught during brushing and styling.

Removing & Reapplying Your Hair Extensions

Removing hair extensions yourself is not recommended.

We recommend that you return to the salon so that we can remove your hair extensions correctly and safely, to ensure no damage is caused to your own hair. If you wish to reuse the hair again, the hair extensions need to be removed very carefully in order to keep all the hair aligned in the same direction, otherwise it will be unusable.

Removing hair extensions is a very simple procedure, which causes no discomfort or damage to the natural hair, leaving it exactly as it was before they were fitted. Many people find their hair is actually in better condition because the hair extensions protect the natural hair against heat and environmental damage. Our hair extensions are removed by applying a small amount of removal solution to the bond, which breaks down the seal and the hair extension then simply slides out. Any remaining residue from the bond and the naturally shed hair is then combed out.

Your hair extensions will need to be reapplied every 3 months. The reapplication appointment consists of initially removing the hair extensions, then your own hair is washed, trimmed (to prevent split ends forming) and blow dried, and finally your hair extensions are reapplied, cut, blended and styled.
